McLaren Falls

McLaren Falls Park is a beautiful park that’s only a 10-minute drive from Tauranga and 25 minutes from Kokomea B&B (32km). It is 190 hectares of parkland set alongside Lake McLaren where you can watch beautiful swans and ducks. The park is popular for camping, fishing, kayaking, disc golf course, wedding photos, picnics, bush walks and summertime concerts. It is also home to one of the best botanical collections of trees in New Zealand.

One of the highlights of the McLaren Falls Park is the waterfall track where you can see glow worms after dusk. Just an short, easy stroll to the picturesque waterfall and you’ll be able to see the glow worms on either side of the track.

Fernland Spa

Just 20km and only a 19 minute drive from Kokomea B&B, you will find some beautiful mineral hot springs, Fernland Spa.

The choice of eight spacious private hot pools or the peaceful atmosphere of the main hot pool offers something for every taste. Choose indoor hot pools or enjoy the open-air spas. All hot pools feature personal shower and separate toilet. These spacious hot pools are perfect for unwinding with a partner or a group of friends. Hot pools are booked in half hour sessions for any length of time.

Mount Maunganui Beach

This is the ultimate spot to swim, surf and sunbathe, and this glorious stretch of golden sand has been voted the best beach in the country.

Main Beach is a fantastic place to people-watch. You’re likely to come across both impromptu and organised games of beach volleyball, soccer, cricket and more.

Car parking is available right along the beach. Public toilets can be found at Mt Drury Reserve opposite Moturiki (Leisure) Island, and a popular boardwalk runs the full length of Main Beach up behind the sand dunes.

Right across the road you’ll find a string of cafes and restaurants where you can grab a coffee and something delicious to eat, or an ice-cold treat from one of the local ice-cream parlours.

Waihi Beach

Further away from Tauranga, past Katikati and around 25 minutes north of Kokomea B&B is Waihi Beach, a much-loved holiday spot that sits at the northern-most tip of our coastal region.

This beach sums up everything people love about the Bay of Plenty coastline – unspoiled white sand, good surf and plenty of room for everyone.

Waihi Beach is a great place to learn to surf or to take a long walk. There are lots of shells and driftwood to collect along your way, and seagulls to keep you company.

This beach is a great day trip or holiday destination for the whole family. Have fun on the large tyre swing that dangles beneath a Pohutukawa tree right on the sand, and spread out and relax in the sunshine.

Aerius Helicopters Hobbiton Movie Set

Fly to the Hobbiton Movie Set where you will be guided through the 1,250 acre working sheep and cattle farm to the site used in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. View Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn and many other structures used in these films.

During your flight, view the spectacular Kaimai Ranges, with stunning waterfalls and lush native forest. See the rolling farmland of the Waikato region, known for its dairy farming and agriculture.

Baywave TECT Aquatic & Leisure Centre

On a rainy day, you may want to visit Tauranga’s indoor aquatic centre. Baywave offers a full range of water and fitness activities for all ages.

Katikati Bird Garden

Only an 11-minute drive and 12km from Kokomea B&B are the Katikati Bird Gardens.

These gardens with their natural attributes of fresh water springs, ponds and wetlands have been transformed from once bare land into a beautiful and special garden.

Sealed paths meander through spectacular golden Swamp Cypress, water trickles its way to the sea through an elaborate series of ponds.

The gardens have approximately 1.5kms of paths. These are tar sealed on slopes or in possible damp areas and are wheel chair friendly. The garden and aviary tour is a 45 – 60 minute walk. There is a café on the premises but you can also bring your own picnic and sit in the café or on the grassy area.

Te Puna Quarry Park

The park is open every day during daylight hours. If the main gates are closed, the park is still open to pedestrians and cars can be parked outside the gates.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome and needed.

Park guides showing the walking tracks are available are available at the information kiosk at the park entrance.

The circular track takes about 45 minutes to walk but if you like exploring you could spend twice as long and still not see it all. We recommend stout footwear to be worn.

The park is situated at the end of Quarry Road (length 1km, which runs off State Highway 2, 15km west of Tauranga.

Omokoroa Beach

Omokoroa, which means ‘place of the long lizard’, is a mere 10-minute drive (9km) from Kokomea B&B. This beach is an idyllic and safe swimming beach to relax and enjoy the scenery and sunshine.

Tauranga Art Gallery

Situated on the corner of Wharf and Willow Streets, in the heart of the CBD, the Tauranga Art Gallery building has been designed to meet modern art gallery standards.

The Art Gallery delivers exhibitions of historical, and contemporary art. Exhibitions are developed in house with the balance being a mix of touring exhibitions from other institutions and artist projects.

There is also a range of education and visitor programs developed around the exhibitions to enhance visitors’ experience. Education is a key focus for Tauranga Art Gallery.
